"Can I Move Forward Without Healing My Past?"
Aug 01, 2024Hello, amazing investors. It's a beautiful day here. I was on my walk this morning, and I couldn’t stop thinking about a question one of my viewers posed. She asked, “Does history really repeat itself?” I had mentioned in one of my videos that unhealed history, or unhealed past, repeats itself. This resonated deeply with me, and I want to explore this idea further with you.
Understanding Personal and Collective History
We all have history. Your history is your personal story from the past, and human history is the story of a group, an ethnic group, a country, or even all of humanity. At the microcosm level, it’s our own story, and at the macrocosm level, it’s the collective journey of human beings. We’re all trying to heal, grow, and learn. Looking at world events, it’s clear we have much to learn and many challenges to overcome, such as violence and war. These issues, often stemming from trauma, affect many people in power and beyond.
Recognizing Repeating Patterns
Consider someone who jumps from one relationship to the next, always blaming the other person. Or someone who moves from job to job, always finding fault in managers or teams. At some point, these individuals must confront the fact that they are the common factor in these scenarios. This is a painful realization but a necessary one.
The Importance of Trauma-Informed Coaching
In my decade of experience as a coach, I’ve learned the value of being trauma-informed. There are two major schools of thought in coaching and therapy. One believes trauma doesn’t matter, and you can always move forward by taking massive action. The other, more modern approach, acknowledges that trauma plays a significant role in how people progress.
Ignoring trauma is like ignoring weeds in a garden and focusing only on the grass. The weeds—representing trauma—need to be addressed. Many people are unaware of how trauma affects their lives. They need a trauma-informed coach or therapist to guide them.
The Assumptions and Limitations of Trauma-Informed Practices
While I advocate for trauma-informed coaching, it’s important to recognize its limitations. A common assumption is that humans are too fragile to handle traumatic experiences. This assumption can hinder progress. From my experience, many clients who have undergone extensive therapy feel stuck. They need someone who can take them to the root of their trauma and help them process it.
Big T Trauma vs. Small T Trauma
Dr. Gabor Maté differentiates between Big T Trauma and Small T Trauma. Big T Trauma includes significant events like abuse, while Small T Trauma consists of more common experiences, such as feeling emotionally disconnected from parents. Most people have some form of trauma that impacts their behavior, emotions, and thoughts.
Healing and Moving Forward
The question arises: Can you move forward without healing your past? The answer is complex. While you should address major traumas to become more functional, healing is an ongoing journey. You don’t need to heal everything before progressing. Sometimes, focusing too much on trauma can amplify it. Learn tools to process trauma and continue moving forward. Life doesn’t wait for complete healing, and you must balance addressing your past with pursuing your goals.
Balancing Success and Well-Being
Many high-achievers are driven by unmet needs from their past. While this can fuel career success, it often leads to sacrificing personal relationships and well-being. Success shouldn’t come at the cost of your health and happiness. With the right approach, you can achieve success without sacrificing what matters most.
Choosing the Right Support
If you feel stuck, work with a trauma-informed coach or therapist who understands current research and practices. Avoid those who treat you as too fragile to handle your past. Effective trauma-informed coaching can provide profound results, often surpassing traditional therapy.

Have you ever experienced hitting a goal or achievement...but didn’t feel the security, freedom or success that you expected?
I have, and many of my clients also didn’t get what they were expecting either. They then set their next goal, thinking that must be the one to get them where they wanted to go.
Think of your biggest goal. When you hit that goal or achievement, do you think you’ll wonder...
- Why the hell did I do this?
- Why am I still not financially secure and feel time freedom?
- Why did I sacrifice my health and relationships to have this?
- Who am I really and why did I compromise myself for this?
- What do I have to live with now?
Despite the external success you see others having, these thoughts are more common than the positive outcomes.
Are your goals your own?
Or are they just the next step down a path that’s not meant for you?
